Project Scope
The Michigan City Parks and Recreation Department prepares Park System master plans and updates to existing plans on a regular basis. In recent plans, Washington Park has been grouped with the other 16 local parks in the MC Park system. The most recent all inclusive park master plan is titled 2002 – 2006 MASTER PLAN and many of the plan’s goals have been implemented. During 2005 budget and project planning workshops, the Park Department realized that without its own plan, there was a risk of piecemeal efforts for Washington Park improvements that may not fit in with ultimate goals. Additionally, due to its unique and beautiful natural qualities, Washington Park stands in a class by itself. The Park Department, the Mayor and other officials decided that Washington Park warranted its own unique and separate master plan.
In 2005 the Park Department solicited requests for proposals for a comprehensive Washington Park Master Plan. In summary, the required Scope of Services included:
| • |
Coordinate planning sessions and public forums |
| • |
Identify items to consider |
| • |
Develop a Draft Master Plan: Incorporate information collected via public input and from City and Park officials; analyze and identify current and historical amenities, infrastructures and utilities; establish goals, identify and prioritize potential action items; prepare cost estimates and identify potential funding sources |
| • |
Completion of a comprehensive Washington Park Master Plan |
The Park Department engaged the services of Haas & Associates, LLC, a local
consulting firm, to work with them to complete this master plan.
The completed report is presented below; separate links have been provided for each section, and the entire master plan is available for download at the bottom of this page.
